E-REDES and the Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Coimbra (ISEC) have collaborated to revolutionise public lighting. The Luxifer Project leverages the FlexIP system to explore new remote communication protocols and smart grid integration, aiming for urban lighting with enhanced efficiency and sustainability.
ISEC students lead the initiative, which involves the deployment of 20 LED luminaires equipped with individual controllers. These controllers allow for precise, point-to-point management and remote monitoring of each luminaire. Initial tests conducted in Coimbra have demonstrated controller effectiveness in optimising lighting performance and energy use.
The importance of energy-efficient lighting systems
The project stands out for its focus on sustainability. By enabling more efficient use of energy and reducing waste, Luxifer contributes to broader environmental goals. The remote monitoring capability also offers significant operational advantages, such as real-time fault detection and maintenance scheduling, which can reduce costs and improve service reliability.
Luxifer’s innovative technology highlights the potential of smart grids in urban infrastructure. The FlexIP system’s ability to integrate various communication protocols and coordinate multiple devices amplifies the future of urban lighting systems. The project not only benefits the local community by providing better lighting but also serves as a model for other cities looking to adopt smart grid technologies.
E-REDES and ISEC’s partnership underscores the importance of collaboration between industry and academia in driving technological advancements. The Luxifer project is a testament to the potential of such partnerships in addressing real-world challenges through innovation and practical application.
